Denver in general and Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City in particular will have to wait for their chance to host soccer's World Cup.

FIFA, the governing association of international soccer, awarded the 2018 tournament to Russia and the 2022 World Cup to Qatar Thursday morning. The U.S. was one of the last four countries under consideration for the 2022 tournament.

Those involved with the bidding for the World Cup touted several sites around Denver, including Dick's, as potential sites for tournament games. The United States last hosted the World Cup in 1994.
