Second suspect arrested in shooting of deputy

ADAMS COUNTY – Adams County sheriff's deputies arrested a 19-year-old woman in connection with the shooting of a deputy about six weeks ago.

Elva Caraveo was arrested April 22 on suspicion of being an accessory to the incident outside an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Coronado Parkway March 13.

Sgt. Candi Baker said deputies and agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement returned to the complex two days after the incident to talk to potential witnesses and gang members. As their investigation continued, they were able to come up with enough information to issue an arrest warrant. Caraveo was taken into custody without incident. As of April 22, she was in the Adams County Detention Facility pending a $10,000 bond.

Baker said the sheriff's office does not have the authority to conduct immigration sweeps.

"The scope of the contacts was limited to those individuals involved in this investigation," she said.

Deputies arrested Sergio Estrada-Gomez, 25, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault. Baker said Gomez and Caraveo are associates.
