Vigil (36-4), who almost didn't return to the team this year but was talked into it by his dad and coaches, beat Lincoln Gregersen of Ralston Valley 13-7 in tonight's finals.
Vigil picked up a technical fall win over Grandview's Rhett Herman in the opening round and a major decision win over Pine Creek's Sir Israel Puido in the quarterfinals. The PVHS sophomore beat Mark Cardenas of POmona 12-6 in the finals.
Elsewhere, PVHS' Josiah Alvarado (33-8) took fifth at 120 pounds. He won three of five matches, incluiding a 4-1 decision over Brayden Legge of Monarch to close out the tournament. His other wins were against Eaglecrest's Keegan Beckford and Pine Creek's Elijah Banks. Ponderosa's Jacob Myers beat Alvarado in the semifinals, and Poudre's Tony Lopez beat Alvarado in overtime in the consolation semifinals.
Bryson Porta (170 pounds) took sixth. Porta (33-14 this season), lost in the first round,m then won three matches in a row in the consolation draw to put himself in position to place in the top six. The wins were againt Pine Creek's David (DJ Thompson of Pine Creek), Cole Griffin of Rocky Mountain (in overtime) and Monarch's Charlie Williams (by pinfall).
Lukas Villalobos split his four matches at 220 pounds. His wins were against Cristian Paez of Poudre and Brok Kolstad of Fairview. Villalobos, who finished with a record of 26-18, did not place. PVHS' 285-pounder, Christopher Parks, did not win either of his matches at state. He finished with a record of 15-11.
Prairie View received a forfeit win over Northglenn High School Feb. 15. The Norse have been in COVID quarantine off and on the past few weeks.
Brighton survived a fourth-quarter rally by rival Prairie View Feb. 18 and picked uip a 45-41 win over the ThunderHawks. PVHS late in the fourth quarter before forcing the extra session. But in the overtime, BHS made two baskets to PVHS' none to get the win. Prairie View had several close-in attempts at the basket during the overtime, but none of the shots went into the basket.
Zia Gonzales scored 20 points to top the Bulldogs' scoresheet. Amanda Byrnes was next with nine. No stats were available for the ThunderHawks.
Prairie View topped Northglenn 53-47 in Brighton Feb. 15. Jonathan hernandez topped the NHS scoresheet with 14 points. Aden Nix was next with nine.
