State 5A wrestling: Brighton's Sailas wins third straight title

Posted

PUEBLO -- Brighton's Kenny Sailas was the top seed at 113 pounds entering the state 5A wrestling tournament March 13, and he held to form to win his third straight state wrestling title.

Sailas edged Cherokee Trail's Derek Glenn Jr. 1-0 in the finals. The BHS senior, who is on his way to the University of Northern Colorado, finished his senior season undefeated in 17 starts.

He had an easy time of it in the first two rounds. He pinned Fountain-Fort Carson's Kyle Jack in 38 seconds of the quarterfinals. In the semis, he dispatched Poudre's Banks Norby in 1:03.

Dylan BravoPacker made it to the finals at 220 pounds and finished second. Pomona's Franklin Cruz earned major, 9-1 decision over the BHS sophomore. It's BravoPacker's second straight runner-up finish at state.

In the semifinals, BravoPacker used a five-point move early in the third period to beat Geoffrey Freeman of Chaparral 10-5.

His quarterfinal win was easier. BravoPacker, who finished second at 220 pounds last year, picked up a technical fall, 17-2 win over Rampart's Dalton Slaughter.

DJ Rock, who finished fifth at 152 pounds, split his first two matches at 152 pounds. He pinned Cherry Creek's Austin Luhring in 4:39, then lost by pinfall to Horizon's Grayston Diblasi in the semifinals.

Thornton's Zack Zuniga beat Rock by a major decision score of 18-6 in Rock's first consolation match.  Rock pinned Presley Pilgrim of ThunderRidge in 1:33 of the fifth-place match.

Elsewhere, at 145 pounds, Brayden Wilkens lost his two matches, including a tough, 3-2 decision at the hands of Adams City's Levi Deaguero in the first round of consolation matches.

At 182 pounds, Levi Fry did not place. He lost to second-seeded Jace Graves of Pine Creek 3-2 in the quarterfinals. Gregory Brooks of Rangeview beat Fry 10-7 in the first round of consolations.

At 285 pounds, Cody Nelsen lost both his matches. Legend's Luke Sandy pinned Fry in 5:30, and Cade Whish of Fort Collins pinned Fry in 3:20 of their consolation round match.
