BHS seniors revive athletic hall of fame

BRIGHTON – Brighton High School has a very rich history that dates back to the late 1800s when it was recognized as one of the first comprehensive high schools in the state of Colorado.

The school has moved a few times since its original opening but has stayed put since 1948.

Since then, the school has gone through a few renovations, some including the Comprehensive Learning Center in the 1970s, and the lobby, new library, new main office, drama wing, athletic offices, locker rooms, and weight room that were added in 2006.

The one thing that has lacked throughout the years is the school's sports hall of fame area. The school has 13 state championships throughout its existence. However, there isn't much to show for it.

Here is where the senior class gift from the class of 2010 comes into play.

A group of kids, led by Aaron Rogers, Zach Albers and inspired on an idea from Evan Fitzgerald, are putting together a project to improve the sports hall of fame section at the school.

"We felt like this part of the school lacked spirit, and we wanted to make it better than it looks now," Rogers said. "We are starting to get a hold of past athletes and old yearbooks so we can get pictures and information on past athletes."

Even though they are going in the right direction with this, they still need help. So far, the students have new picture frames and templates. Now, all they need are the pictures themselves.

The students would like to network as best as they can, asking for 8-by-10 photos of all BHS athletes from 1950 until 2005 who were either All-State first-team members or anyone who received state recognition of some kind, including All-Americans.

“We have a long history at Brighton High School, and we want to make sports a big part of this school," Albers said. "It's a little run down, and we want to make it look more professional – something that this school and this community could be proud of."

Before 1950, Brighton High School crowned two state champions, the BHS football teams in 1934 and 1941.

Since the 1950s, BHS has won 11 team  state championships. The boys basketball team won in 1951, '52 and '54. The wrestling team won it all in 1984, '86, '87, '90, '91, '93 and '94. The cheerleading team from 1998 also won the spirit competition that season.

Those who were involved or know of someone involved in one of these championship season, contact Athletic Director Michael Stoffler via e-mail at MStoffler@sd27j.org.
